Radiation Oncology

At Goshen Center for Cancer Care, we’ve assembled a team of highly skilled and trained radiation specialists, including oncologists, therapists, physicists, dosimetrists and nurses, allowing us to treat even the most difficult and advanced prostate cancer cases. These experts are led by our dedicated director of radiation oncology, James A, Wheeler, MD, PhD, who constantly seeks out the latest and best radiation technology, such as TomoTherapy, High-Dose Rate Brachytherapy and Low-Dose Rate Brachytherapy. Then through our unique integrated environment, these radiation therapies are seamlessly blended with other advanced treatments, complementary and alternative medicine and a long list of supportive services to offer you the most complete care available.

To offer our patients the best treatments, we uniquely offer radiation options that are found nowhere else and are only available through clinical trials. This allows us to treat a wide-range of prostate cancer cases, from low-risk, localized to high-risk and recurrent disease.

Radiation Therapy Defined

Radiation therapy is the use of energy to kill cancer cells and shrink tumors. Radiation injures or destroys cells in the area being treated by damaging their genetic material, making it impossible for them to grow and divide. Although radiation damages both cancer cells and normal cells, most normal cells can recover from the effects of radiation and function properly.

Radiation therapy may be used in early-stage prostate cancer to treat the patient. It also can be used before surgery to shrink a tumor or after surgery to prevent cancer from coming back almost anywhere within the body. Radiation may also be used to treat pain caused by the cancer. For prostate cancer, our radiation oncology team uses advanced internal and external techniques to deliver targeted doses to cancer cells, while limiting exposure to healthy tissue.

Options For Each Patient

There are different types of radiation and different ways to deliver it, with some penetrating more deeply into the body than others. In addition, some types of radiation can be finely controlled to treat only a small area without damaging nearby tissues and organs, while others are better for treating larger areas. At Goshen Center for Cancer Care, we offer the latest and most refined types of radiation available.
