Screenings
Finding cancer before it spreads is one of the most important keys to survival. Studies have shown that if cancer is found early it can make a big difference in survival. This makes cancer screenings vital tools in the fight against cancer.
It may be a suspicious mole, a lump in the breast or for some people they’ve simply reached the age when a routine test should be part of the health equation. Whatever the reason, there are a number of screenings available at IU Health Goshen Center for Cancer Care and we encourage everyone to talk to their physician to see if now is the right time for a screening.
Breast Cancer ScreeningsEvery day we learn more about breast cancer and how to win the battle. One fact is very clear – the distinct advantage is early detection. Mammograms are the only test proven to decrease the chances of dying from breast cancer. If breast cancer is detected early, before it spreads, 96% of women will be alive five years later. Skin Cancer ScreeningsThe most common type of all cancers, skin cancer accounts for nearly half of all diagnosed cancers in the United States. The good news is that when diagnosed early, skin cancer is very treatable. Regular skin checks can alert you to potential problems before they become serious. |
Colon Cancer ScreeningsColon cancer is treatable but it has to be caught early, which is why getting a colonoscopy is so important. Men and women 50 and older account for more than 90 percent of colon cancer cases so if you are at risk, talk to your doctor about whether it’s the right time for a test. |
Prostate Cancer ScreeningsCancers of the prostate gland are the most common cancer found in men. One in six men will be diagnosed during his lifetime. However, the disease is highly treatable when detected early. Starting at age 50 – or age 45 if you're at higher risk, ask your physician about which screenings are right for you. |
Cervical Cancer ScreeningsThe good news is that Cervical Cancer can be caught early and early detection improves the odds of survival. And because Cervical Cancers usually show no symptoms it is important for women to have regular screenings. |
Lung Cancer ScreeningsMore people die of Lung Cancer than colon, prostate and breast cancer combined. Lung cancer screening is not usually advised as no test has been proven to help reduce deaths from the disease. However, regular exams can help detect Lung Cancer early. |
